In Loving Memory of Ruger — The Goodest of Good Boys

Ruger was truly the goodest of good boys. A border collie–Jack Russell mix, he had the looks of a border collie and the spirited personality of both breeds. From the moment he was born, Ruger was loved deeply and wholeheartedly, and for 14 wonderful years, he gave that love back tenfold.

As a puppy, Ruger was full of boundless energy, often needing hours of play to tire him out. As he grew older, he became calmer and wiser, but never lost his playful spark. He was fiercely loyal and protective, yet gentle beyond measure — a dog who would never hurt a fly. He adored people, was amazing with children, and got along wonderfully with other dogs, even if he occasionally embarrassed himself by humping them.

Ruger was the constant companion and best friend of my daughter from the age of 8 through adulthood. He was there for every season of our lives: through loss and grief, career changes, milestones, graduations, new beginnings, and love. In the final month of his life, he moved into a new home filled with love, joining me, my fiancée, and her son — a transition he embraced with his usual warmth and devotion.

He loved pup cups from Dutch Bros, car rides, trips to the dog park, snacks, belly rubs, and simply being close to his people. More than anything, Ruger loved belonging — and he made sure we always felt that love in return.

Fourteen years will never be enough, but every one of those days was a gift. Ruger will forever remain a part of our hearts, our memories, and our family.
